When Japanese people think of summer in Hokkaido, one of the first images that comes to mind is a vast lavender field stretching toward the horizon. Every July, these purple landscapes attract visitors from all over Japan, making them one of the country’s most beloved seasonal destinations. The sight of endless lavender blossoms combined with Hokkaido’s cool summer air creates a refreshing escape from the heat found in much of the rest of Japan.
Although lavender originally came from Europe, it has become deeply associated with Hokkaido thanks to the region’s ideal climate. Besides their beautiful appearance, lavender flowers are cherished for their soothing fragrance and are used in perfumes, essential oils, soaps, and dried flower arrangements. Walking through a lavender field is a feast for both the eyes and the senses.
This summer, the lavender fields at Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill are once again at their peak. About 1,000 lavender plants bloom across a 1,200-square-meter garden, featuring two popular varieties: the deep-purple Noushi Hayazaki, which flowers early in the season, and the highly fragrant Okamurasaki.
Visitors can also enjoy a special harvesting experience until July 12. Each participant may cut and take home around 50 lavender stems, allowing them to dry the flowers and continue enjoying their relaxing fragrance long after their visit. Many visitors say that harvesting lavender while surrounded by fresh air and purple blossoms is one of the most peaceful moments of their trip.
Lavender fields are more than just beautiful places to take photographs. They remind us to slow down, breathe deeply, and appreciate nature’s quiet beauty. 北海道のラベンダー畑―色と香りに満ちた夏の風景
日本人が北海道の夏を思い浮かべるとき、最初に頭に浮かぶ風景の一つが、地平線まで広がる広大なラベンダー畑です。毎年7月になると、この紫色の風景は日本中から観光客を引き寄せ、日本で最も愛されている夏の観光地の一つとなります。果てしなく続くラベンダーの花と北海道の涼しい夏の空気が組み合わさることで、日本の他の多くの地域の暑さから逃れられる、さわやかなひとときを生み出しています。
ラベンダーはもともとヨーロッパ原産ですが、北海道の気候が栽培に理想的であることから、この地域を代表する花となりました。その美しい見た目だけでなく、ラベンダーは心を落ち着かせる香りでも親しまれ、香水やエッセンシャルオイル、石けん、ドライフラワーなどにも利用されています。ラベンダー畑を歩くことは、目でも香りでも楽しめる体験です。
今年の夏も、さっぽろ羊ヶ丘展望台のラベンダー畑が見頃を迎えています。約1,200平方メートルの花畑には、およそ1,000株のラベンダーが咲き誇り、早咲きで濃い紫色が特徴の「濃紫早咲」と、豊かな香りで知られる「オカムラサキ」という2種類の品種を楽しむことができます。
また、7月12日までは特別な刈り取り体験も開催されています。参加者は約50本のラベンダーを刈り取り、自宅へ持ち帰ることができるため、花をドライフラワーにして、訪れた後もそのやさしい香りを楽しむことができます。多くの来場者は、新鮮な空気と紫色の花々に囲まれながらラベンダーを刈り取る時間は、旅の中でも最も穏やかなひとときの一つだと話しています。
