As summer approaches in Japan, one of the country’s most exciting traditional festivals begins to prepare for its grand celebration. In the city of Fukuoka, artisans are now busy making hundreds of paper lanterns for Hakata Gion Yamakasa, a famous festival held every year from July 1 to July 15.
Hakata Gion Yamakasa has a history of more than 770 years and is one of Japan’s most energetic and colorful festivals. During the event, teams of local men race through the streets carrying beautifully decorated festival floats weighing over one ton. The festival is dedicated to Kushida Shrine and is believed to pray for protection from disease, good health, and prosperity.
The paper lanterns are an important part of the festival. Participants carry them during ceremonies and processions, creating a warm and traditional atmosphere after sunset. At a long-established lantern workshop in Hakata, craftsmen carefully paste handmade Japanese paper onto bamboo frames before writing each participant’s title and neighborhood name in bold calligraphy. Finally, the lanterns are coated with oil to make the paper stronger and more resistant to rain.
The workshop has been making these lanterns for more than 130 years, and around 300 lanterns are produced each season. The craftsman says he always tries to write with powerful brush strokes that reflect the strength and courage of the Yamakasa runners.
While the thrilling races often attract the most attention, festivals like Hakata Gion Yamakasa are supported by many skilled artisans working behind the scenes. Their traditional craftsmanship helps preserve not only the beauty of the festival but also the spirit of Japanese culture that has been passed down for generations.
博多祇園山笠の精神を照らすちょうちん
